2008 Confidence WOMEN FIRST 5km

Tiki Gelana, younger cousin of 2000 Sydney Olympic marathon champion Gezahagne Abera, was a convincing winner of the 5th edition of the WOMEN FIRST 5km. Gelana, who had previously finished 4th in this race in 2005, took control of the race just short of the 4km mark, breaking away from 5000m specialist Amana Godana who took the runners’ up position. Just under 7000 participants took part in the race which was started by Haile Gebrselassie and Meseret Defar who also presented prizes to the winners.

2007 Confidence WOMEN FIRST 5km

Asselefech Mergia won the 2007 Confidence WOMEN FIRST 5km with a five-second victory ahead of the All-Ethiopian 10,000m champion Ashu Kassim, with last year’s third placer Makeda Haroun repeating her podium finish this year. The field included Australian Victoria Mitchell and Kenyan Rose Jepkemboi who were among the early leaders. Race winner Merga and Deribe Alemu upped the pace as they headed down past the Alem Building in Bole just past the 3km point.Mergia hit the front with less than 800m. Rose Jepkemboi was the first foreign runner home in eighth.

2006 Confidence WOMEN FIRST 5km

8000 women took to the streets of Addis for the 2006 Confidence Women First 5km Run held in conjunction with 2006 International Women's Day. The day belonged to Muger Sport Club athlete Rehima Kedir who recorded the biggest win of her career by running away from a class field in this, the third edition of Ethiopia's annual women's-only road race. Kedir, who finished 7th in the 2005 Ethiopian 5,000m championship, took control of the race at the halfway mark and never looked back, crossing the line in a time of 15:42.77, fifteen seconds faster than last year's course record. 2005 race winner Koreni Jelila beat Makeda Haroun to the finish for second place with the Prisons athlete Haroun securing 3rd place. While the cash prizes went to the country’s top club athletes, the occasion was just as special for the thousands of girls and women all dressed in lime-green race T-shirts who completed the 5km distance. Ethiopia's top athletes including Haile Gebrselassie, Meseret Defar, Gete Wami, Berhane Adere and Assefa Mezgebu were among those greeting the runners as they poured over the finish line.
